Quest of the Ringbearer
The year 1401 Shire-reckoning:
It was a sunny morning in the Shire but something mischievous was about to happen. Frodo Baggins, his cousins Meriadoc Brandybuck - called Merry and Peregrin Took - called Pippin were on a journey around the local inns when they descovered they had forgotten to pack their waybread! What to do? Well Farmer Maggots farm was not far and as Merry and Pippin could testify his crop was quite delicious! He would not mind them borrowing a few carrots? And pumpkins? And maybe some salad? Potatoes? And some of those tomatoes? It was decided quite fast that it was an excellent idea!
On their way to Maggots farm they ran into Samwise Gamgee who was making some errants for the old Gaffer. Upon hearing their plan Sam pleaded with them not to anger Farmer Maggot and especially not his three giant dogs Grip, Fang and Wolf! Frodo, Merry and Pippin laughed at his concern and bid him a good day. Sam lamented what to do! On the one side stealing was wrong and he was scared of the farmer and his hounds. On the other Mr. Baggins Uncle Bilbo was his employer and he always had a fondness for Frodo who always treated the Gamgees with a lot of respect. In the end his loyalty won out he had to keep these thee fools out of harm! "Wait for me!" He cried out and hurried after them.
As they arrived at Maggots farm everything was quiet. Well not everything. A loud snoring could be heard comming from the house. "Maggot is still dreaming about his carrots!" Pippin snickered. "Well so am I!" Merry exclaimed with big eyes. "There they are! Let's grab some!"
The four Hobbits rushed to the fence around the field.
"Ow!! My foot!!!" Pippin cried out. He had stept on a rake likely left there by Maggot after a hard half days work. "Quiet Pippin the dogs!" Frodo whispered. But it was too late. Barking could be heard in the distance! "Let's grab what we can!" Merry shouted and he and Pippin jumped the fence.
Out of the field one of Maggots dogs, Wolf lounged at them! The two Hobbits took up some sticks whacking Wolf on the snout. With his tail between his legs the hound ran of back into the hut. "Ha! Away with you!" Merry cried in excitement. But quickly fell silent cursing himself as moments later shouting could be heard comming from inside the farm. Maggot was awake!
The farmer came running out of his house, took up a scythe and made his way towards the doghouse where he could hear Wolf howling.
Meanwhile Frodo jumped over the fence and ontop of a crate of apples the farmer had stored there. Hastily he made of with them, as he could see Maggots other two dogs Grip and Fang rushing towards him!
"I'll protect you Mr. Frodo!" he heard as Sam tackled the two dogs!
Brave Sam was rewarded with a few bites but held firm. Soon chaos was about him. The Hobbits tried to collect their well deserved breakfast while the hounds dashed about biting and barking terribly.
Everytime the Hobbits managed to drive one of the dogs away it didn't take long till they heard Maggots commands driving the hounds back at them! "Come now! We neary have enough!" Merry cried. "Just some more carrots and those tasty tomatoes over there!"
Sam tried his best heaving another crate over the fence when he heard Fang barking behind him.
The dog bit him right in the behind! Oh how it hurt! And what was even worse as he hopped around trying to get the dog of of him, he could see the tip of Maggots sythe over the crops comming straight at them!
"I'll get you! Whoever you are! Nobody steals from me!" That was to much for Sam! As he finally got the dog of him he jumped out of the field and ran as fast as he could! Shedding tears of shame, for he had deserted his friends.
On the other side things were also not looking very well. Merry and Pippin with their experience in these things carried away as much as they could. But they were constantly harried by the hounds. Frodo had it the worst. Fang and Wolf grabbed him and roughed him up quite a bit.
"Ah my fine new cloak!" It was all a bit much and he longed for a quiet breakfast in Bag-End. When he saw an opening he hurried after Sam shouting back at his cousins: "Enough fun for today I think. We should leave now!"
But before the other two could react Maggot was upon them! "A Brandybuck! And a Took! Who else?" He cried as he vaulted over the fence.
"Get them!" He shouted at his hounds. And they obeyed their master in an instance. Wolf fell upon Merry, Grip and Fang grabbed Pippin with their teeth, holding him down for their master.
Merry once again whacked Wolf on the head and drove him away. But as he turned around he just saw Maggot kicking Pippin in the behind and sending him off after having delivered a thorough beating.
"I'm sorry Merry! Run away!" He could hear Pippin crying as the farmer and his two remaining dogs turned around towards him.
From all sides they came for him.
Merry lashed out with his stick and even managed to scare away Grip.
But then Maggot had him. Whacking him over and over untill Merry gave up.
"Now then young Brandybuck. How about you put back my crop where it belongs? And after that you'll work the fields with me the whole morning! And no complaining! If you do your job well, maybe, maybe you get to join me for dinner!" Farmer Maggot said looking down on the hobbit, for he also was once young and a bit adventurous.
Merry wiped away his tears. So! There still was a chance to get his belly full of the Farmer Maggots crop? Maybe this adventure was worth it in the end.
